SEO, GEO, and Your Dealership: The New Rules of Visibility

We’ve had a pretty clear goal for search marketing for years: someone searches on Google for a dealership, vehicle, or service in your market, and you want to show up. That’s still part of the goal, but search isn’t limited to a page of links anymore. People are getting answers through Google’s AI-powered search experiences and places like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude, where the goal is not really to rank a list of websites. It is to build an answer using information from across the web

That is where GEO comes in. And even though SEO and GEO are often discussed as two distinct strategies, the difference between them is smaller than it sounds.

SEO and GEO Start With the Same Foundation

SEO focuses on improving a dealership’s visibility in traditional search results. GEO focuses on visibility within AI-generated answers and conversational search. The way that visibility shows up may be different. Still, so much of the work behind it is the same: strong content, technical fundamentals, structured data, accurate business information, reputation, and authority across the web.

90% of the SEO and GEO playbooks overlap. Dealers with a strong SEO foundation are not starting from scratch as search evolves, because what helps a dealership perform in traditional search also provides AI platforms with useful, credible information to work with.

The difference is in the 10%.  Understanding how AI platforms use and cite information, creating content that answers more complex questions, tracking mentions and citations instead of rankings alone, and identifying visibility gaps across the broader web.

Where SEO and GEO Begin to Diverge

Traditional SEO has focused heavily on how a website performs in search results. Where does the dealership rank? Does the page earn the click? Is the site fast, well organized, and relevant to the search? Those things still matter. Generative search adds another question: Will an AI platform use your dealership when it builds its answer?

That changes how we think about success. With SEO, we look at things like rankings, organic traffic, and click-through rate. With GEO, we also need to know whether the dealership is mentioned or cited in the generated answers, which sources influence those answers, and how consistently the dealership appears across different AI platforms.

To understand that, you have to look beyond the dealership website.

Your Website Is Only Part of the Answer

Search engines have always used signals from across the web, including links and local business information. That broader digital footprint becomes especially important in generative search, where an answer may be assembled using information from dealership websites, reviews, directories, forums, publishers, and other third-party sources.

A dealership can have a technically sound, well-optimized website and still have gaps in its AI visibility.

GEO expands the question from “What does my website say about my dealership?” to “What does the internet say about my dealership?”

Reviews, reputation, third-party mentions, and accurate business information all help paint that picture. Content matters too, but it needs to do more than target a keyword. It needs to provide clear, useful information that helps answer the questions consumers are already asking.

Keywords Aren’t Dead. Search Behavior Has Expanded.

GEO does not mean keywords suddenly stop mattering. People still search for things like “Honda dealer near me” or “used SUVs in Raleigh.” But they’re also having conversations:

“What dealership near me has a good reputation for service?”

“Where should I buy a used SUV if I live outside Raleigh?”

“Which Honda dealers near me are known for transparent pricing?”

Those searches give the engine more context about what the consumer actually wants to know. Instead of creating content only around the phrase someone might type into a search box, dealerships also need to consider the questions consumers ask and whether they’re providing enough information to answer them.

That can include content about inventory, services, pricing, ownership experience, the local market, and the dealership’s role in its community. GEO is not simply about making content sound more conversational. It is about making sure the information consumers are looking for is clear, useful, and easy for search and AI platforms to understand.

Strong SEO Is Already Doing Some of the GEO Work

GEO is not a reason to throw out an SEO strategy and start over. Our own data shows why.

Reunion Marketing’s long-standing SEO clients are already seeing significant visibility in AI search. Across our analysis, 70% of dealers led their market in LLM visibility, 84% ranked as a top-three cited source, and 12,423 pages built by Reunion Marketing were cited in LLMs. For 194 separate dealerships, an RM-built page from the dealer’s own website was cited, increasing visibility by an average of 28%.

The takeaway is pretty straightforward: the work that makes a dealership useful and authoritative in traditional search can also help make it visible in AI search.

GEO builds on that by paying closer attention to where generative search behaves differently, including more complex consumer questions, reputation, third-party authority, citations, and visibility across multiple AI platforms.

Competing for the Answer

Consumers have not stopped using traditional search because AI search exists. They are using both, sometimes without making much distinction between the two. That means dealers cannot afford to think about SEO and GEO as competing strategies.

The goal is no longer just to rank well on a search results page. It is to build relevance, authority, and trust across the web so your dealership can show up wherever consumers are looking for answers.

The fundamentals of good search marketing have not disappeared. The places those fundamentals need to work have expanded.
